"Kartaka"-the premiere of director Gintaras Varnas at the Kaunas National Drama Theater, based on a play by the Polish poet and playwright Tadeusz Różewicz (1921-2014). Tadeusz Różewicz is one of the most prominent representatives of post -war Polish modernism called modernism. He wrote this play in 1958/59, fascinated by the theater theater creators Samuel Beckett and Eugene Ionesco, and is still considered one of the most important drama works in Polish literary history.
The drama takes place in the room of the main character, and the hero himself spends time in bed. He is lonely, frustrated, lost, tired and losing control of his life. His home is no longer a safe haven, anyone can get into them, reminding them of a street where various people walk through various things. The hero's actions have no specific purpose, his political views are blurred, his beliefs are vague, and posture is passive. He is without a face, without age, without name, without a profession. He is a hero without personality. His life collapsed into individual episodes and resembles a messy set of biography pages, the file. During the action, some events come out, others fade like memory negatives. The fragmentary composition of the "Ketėkos" is like a file of human consciousness that mixes the memories of the past, the emptiness of the present and the mist of the future. Such a surreal tragicomic collage of episodes of the hero's life reflects the inner fractures of the war, value and emotional chaos. "This is a performance that is suitable for our great times. The times are big, only people are too little," the players themselves comment ironically. Is this universal state of decomposition, chaos and meaninglessness, lack of constructive ideas and fatigue today?
It is an ironic performance about a person at the crossroads, his walking into himself and the attempt to find the meaning of life. It is the theater of imagination, dreams and memories. It is a living theater that touches the essence of modern problems.
