The performance, inspired by the film of Arūnas Žebriūnas, the life line of actress Vaiva Mainelytė, the intimate cinema language of John Cassavetes and the short story "Baltaragio's Mill" by Kazi Boruta, creates a story about the influence of collective myths on our identities.
The creators of the show raise questions: do we want to stop time to live it or to maintain control? The story is constructed through the perspective of the main character, the young actress Jurga, who will be played by Alvydė Pikturnaitė. She no longer understands whether she really loves or just plays the role of love. The world that Jurga once wanted to conquer becomes empty, and pleasure can no longer fill this void.
Playwright and director of the play Naubertas Jasinskas: "We are creating a completely new interpretation of "The Devil's Bride" - it will not be a new production of Boruta's work or a staging of the film with young actors. This performance raises the question of whether reconstruction is love for the past or the inability to create and be in the present. The piece is relevant today because we live in a culture obsessed with reconstructions, thus fostering a dangerous relationship with memory. The desire to restore, recreate, return becomes a safe zone where real questions about the present can be avoided."
Inspired by various sources, the performance "Devil's Bride" consists of two parts. In the first part, the viewer is immersed in the memory of the legendary film "Devil's Bride" - here it becomes not only a stage reconstruction, but also an inner memory, longing, dream of an aging actress. From the point of the past, from a romanticized story about love and eternity, we move to the second part - the present. It shows the meeting of the same characters - a man and a woman - today: their connection has dissolved, their love has ended, their promises have faded. What we see is not the promised fulfillment of the cultural myth, but the collapse. It is this turning point that allows us to deconstruct the myth that love solves everything. The second part of the play shows that the long-awaited "they lived happily ever after" never came. It is a contemporary reflection on the power of time, the discrepancy between memory and reality, and the painful need to look at myth without romanticized longing.
