Itaru Sasaki from Otsuchi, Japan learned that his beloved cousin had cancer and only three months to live. After the death of his cousin, Sasaki built an old phone booth in his yard so that he could communicate with the deceased every day, and his words would be carried away by the wind. A tsunami occurred in the vicinity of Otsuchi, killing 10 percent of the population. city residents. Gradually, people found out about the phone booth and began visiting Itaru Sasaki's garden to call their lost loved ones. From 2022 on March 1, just a week after Russia started the war in Ukraine, an old payphone, identical to the "wind phone" that stood in Japan, was placed near the Lithuanian National Opera and Ballet Theater. People were invited to stop by and "call" those who didn't get to say what they wanted to say in time, and now it's too late. In more than 6 months, the phone was picked up about 4000 times. Audio recordings of all the authentic stories became the basis of the opera's libretto. The payphone opera "Things I didn't dare to say, and now it's too late" is a sensitive, delicate story about a person who is grieving, at the same time it is a transparent cut through the geographical territories opened by grief, a journey to meeting, reconciliation, experiencing the world as a whole. Creators about the play:
The payphone opera is a poem about human transience. Delicate, human and sometimes witty images are created on the stage from here and there: bodies and objects appear here and disappear in the light and dark. Everything passes - people, time, places, things, events. Director and playwright Kamilė Gudmonaitė
My relationship with the piece, or rather with the recordings of the "calls" left by passers-by on the payphone that make it up, constantly changed. At each stage of the long creative process, I discovered a different perspective on what everyone was saying in the payphone booth. At first, as if listening to very open statements from the sidelines, now I reconsider them by standing in the place of the callers or their addressees. This opera posed quite a few challenges: how to create the inner soundscape of each of us, how to transfer the often extremely sensitive, delicate content of the calls - the sacred being - to the theater stage? Music, sound here becomes an invisible medium, a radiating energy that says what we didn't dare to say, and now it's too late. Composer Dominykas Digimas
The scenery of this work is an intermediate space, like a reflection of the inner world, a meeting where a relationship with the other side is felt. The action takes place in a transitive space highlighting border states, where everyday life is intertwined with temporality and uncertainty. The visual atmosphere of the work is dedicated to life and death, closeness and longing. Scenographer and author of the concept of video projections Barbora Šulniūtė
