OKT/Vilnius City Theater invites you to venture into new, unknown X territories this season. Jakūb Brazis' new play "The Story of the Eye", inspired by the story of George Bataille, is a mystery that opens up many new territories. It is a work that combines the territories of lust that crosses all boundaries, transgression that establishes the law, and sacredness and ritual.
George Bataille is one of the most prominent and controversial figures of the 20th century. in the world of literature. Having grown up in the family of, as he says, "sick, blind, insane creatures" (he means his father) and a little later, in the family of a mother who "lost her mind and plunged into melancholy", George Bataille was "afraid of his own madness" all his life, and this is especially noticeable in George Bataille's constantly sharp edge in his work. He begins his independent life in a monastery, which he quickly abandons and throws himself into the complete opposite - he begins to live an extremely loose life.
George Bataille is one of those overly open and brave geniuses who dare to be recognized only after their death, and until then they are not considered thinkers or writers, but simply paranoid and crazy (this is what both André Breton and Jean Paul Sartre said about George Bataille). After George Bataille's death, Michel Foucault said: "Today we know that George Bataille is one of the most important writers of our age." Thus, in the "History of the Eye" we must not lose sight of all the complicated and wild life and activities of George Bataille. It was this totality that made George Bataille's contemporaries consider George Bataille a madman, a debauchee, and after his death became almost a proof of his sanctity.
"The Story of the Eye" by George Bataille is an erotic story inspired by Sade's works, childhood memories, impressions from a stage of life in Spain, at the epicenter of bullfighting and its cruelty, thoughts about a blind father and the chaos of a buried life.
