"The Master of Hunger" is one of the last short stories of Franz Kafka, summarizing his entire work, ethical and aesthetic attitudes, approach to life. This is the story of an Artist who is able to starve for incredibly long periods of time and attracts crowds of enthralled spectators. Unfortunately, times and audience preferences change, and the unsurpassed Master of Hunger, despite having reached the pinnacle of his art, dies alone, forgotten by everyone behind the scenes of the circus. Like all the works of the most famous Austrian writer of the 20th century, "The Master of Hunger" is a very personal, subjective story that reveals the most mysterious depths of the artist's own subconscious. The play by Eimuntas Nekrošius is the result of the improvisations of the director and the actors on the theme of Kafka's short story. The director is extremely demanding in his work, just like Kafka himself, who is able to find and not miss a single meaningful thought, phrase, word, evocatively, openly, with theatrical means he immerses the actors in the very essence of the story and allows the viewer to not even understand, but to feel with all his soul what the creator goes through in his glory hours, how he fights for his idea with the audience who does not understand him and the impresario who manipulates his work. Just like in the short story, Nekrošius' play has a lot of self-irony, subtle, intellectual humor that makes everyone smile. The main role of the Master of Hunger is created by Viktorija Kuodytė, who has been playing in Nekrošius's plays since 1994 (Laura - "Mažosios Tragedijos", Irina - "Three Sisters", Ophelia - "Hamlet", etc.). Vaidas Vilius, Vygandas Vadeiša and Genadijus Virkovskis help her and wittily create the characters of the artist's environment. After the play's premiere, the press wrote: If one had to single out the only theatrical event of the year, it would be Eimuntas Nekrošius' "The Master of Hunger" based on Franz Kafka's short story, shown at Meno forte. Everything is in a low voice, but it stabs deep: the content is suppressed, and the talent of the creators rises. You feel crushed because you realize that a person who believed in the meaning of his life is "buried with his straw". But you are also happy that you experienced the performance. This is the effect of the ironic, and indeed tragic work directed by E. Nekrošiaus and played by Viktorija Kuodytė. V. Kuodytė, reciting the text of F. Kafka's novella, plays both the drama of the Master of Hunger and his comedy, his strength and weakness, because neither the author nor the director spared sarcasm for the puzzle of the fate of the Master of Hunger. (Lithuanian Morning) "Virtuous, fearless Viktoria Kuodytė does not make a single false gesture, it is an instrument of work, it is shaken like a drapery, it is stretched like a string. It is the body of a workhorse, a ballerina and a gymnast. In Nekrošius' performance, it turns into a hymn to creation, sung by the pale lips of a dying hero. (A. Kislova)
