"Totalitarian novel" is the latest play by Marius Ivaškevičius, staged in 2024 at the Estonian Drama Theater and gathering packed halls in Tallinn for the second season. This is a kind of theatrical revenge against totalitarian regimes that stifle any expression of free speech in their countries. What was silenced there, not only by stifling the performance, but also by repressing its creators, can be reborn in the free world on an incomparably larger and more painful scale for dictators.
The play begins with a specific totalitarian crackdown on theaters in Tajikistan, which the author had to witness in 2022. According to Chingiz Aitmatov's artistic legend, the play "Mankurtas" staged there was banned right before the premiere, one actor was arrested and imprisoned for ten years, others were interrogated and emotionally broken, and the legendary Tajik director who directed the play was forced to leave his homeland once again. It is the conversation between the author and the director of this banned performance, which took place half a year after those violent events, that becomes the axis of the play. A conversation about the brutality and absurdity of the new post-Soviet regimes, the hope and hopelessness of change, seeing what is happening in other countries with a similar fate, such as Russia or Belarus. In search of the origins of all this, one goes back to Stalin's Soviet Union, and the metaphor of "mankurt", how an ideal slave is carved from an unruly captive, using physical and spiritual violence, draws parallels to the fate of the artists of the USSR of that time. Finally, not wanting to be just a cold judge, the author recalls his childhood, when he wrote a poem glorifying the Soviet Empire in pursuit of childish fame. The play becomes a consideration of how resilient we can be when faced with similar circumstances? How not to sell your soul when it is constantly being attacked - starting with tempting apartments and volga, and ending with torture in the camp. When there are no opportunities to escape to the free world, and the one you live in seems eternal and unshakable.
The performance in Estonian will be dubbed live in Lithuanian. The play is voiced by M. Ivaškevičius, the author of the play.
