In the Vilnius State Small Theater, the performance is created by the young generation director Augustas Gornatkevičius, whose artistic style the audience has already come to love and appreciate. This time, having assembled a team of recognized and talented actors from different theater schools, the director presents one of the most staged plays by the Nobel laureate Gerhart Hauptmann, "Rats", which the artist created just before the famous award. Prominent German writer Hauptmann, creating bright psychological characters, sensitively explores social problems, highlighting the lower layers of society, the tragedies of their lives. While staging the play, named by the author himself as a Berlin tragicomedy, the director speaking about the 20th century. Berlin of the beginning, draws clear parallels with today.
In the center of the play are two women, united by the theme of motherhood. The maid Paulina Pyperkarka is pregnant with an unplanned and unwanted child, while the wife of the worker Jonas is still mourning the newborn who died a few years ago. The child unites not only two women living private lives, but also all other dramatic events unfolding more vividly or quietly on the stage, become directly related to the fate of Paulina's child and his future two mothers. The action takes place in a closed space - in the theater studio of former theater director Haro Hasenreuter, among old theater props and costumes, where Paulina's baby is born. A detective story quickly begins involving the other residents of the house and the police, leading to a tragic end.
According to the director A. Gornatkevičius, the play "Rats" primarily talks about social exclusion and inequality, and it highlights the deep causes of social alienation and radicalization. The meeting of different social strata in one closed space in the work allows us to reveal the different perception of the world and the goals set for themselves by these social groups. In "Rats" the portrait of a woman unfolds very vividly, which raises not so much internal desires and fears, but the surrounding environment and imposed roles, the problem of body autonomy, which is so vividly reconsidered in the Western world today. The work, with its storyline and style imbued with subtle humor, once again reminds us of the true joy of a strong dramatic work on the theater stage.
