The team of actors of the Vilnius Small Theater of different generations, together with the director Gabriele Tuminaita and the writer Paulina Pukyte, present the stage version of the work known to everyone from school - Žemaitė's "Marčios". The creators of the show present a new look at the work covered in stereotypical interpretations and its characters - Katrė, her father, Vingiai Jonas and others. Has the modern world that glorifies women's emancipation and equal opportunities really changed significantly from the one described by Žemaitė? The show reflects the creators' attempts to understand the 19th century. concepts of marriage, family, love and happiness and compare them with modern ones. However, the environment of the characters created by Vytautas Narbutos - the remains of an abandoned stadium - is imbued with both haunted houses and an atmosphere of inner debauchery. The play is full of stage symbolism and generalizations that create an almost surreal mood. After arriving at the Vingiai house, Katrė falls into a real nightmare, from which, unfortunately, only death can save her...
This story by Žemaitė about the nightmare experienced by a young woman who gets stuck in the swamp of the Vingiai family, most of them for the last time we read (if we read at all) at school. In the case of me and my generation, it was during the Soviet era, when gender inequality was hardly felt in the everyday public environment, but at home a woman knew "her place", and domestic violence, which was then called "just a domestic conflict" (unofficially called so until now), was considered a private matter of people, in which the state is not obliged to interfere; there was no talk of psychological violence then, bullying as a phenomenon was not even named, and there was no talk of a feminist approach either. And still, Žemaitė described in the 19th century. life seemed archaic, the productions of "Marčia" were costumed folk soap operas, and the tragedy of Katrė and such a hopeless situation of a woman were to blame for the social order that had already perished. But today we see that this story is also about us, and how the obligatory "basic cell of society" can destroy a person, and how an aggressive, blunt, inert mass eats away at the individual. What is happening in "Marcia" happened both 120 and 50 years ago, it is successfully happening now, patriarchal customs and habits rule, inertness of thinking and behavior flourishes, a woman is still guilty of a man's bad behavior, it is still a shame not to marry, different worthy of bullying just because of his otherness, only one can be mocked by thousands now, and the military "suffocation" in general has become the norm of communication in the most diverse spheres of life. Has anything changed for the better? Perhaps our point of view?
Paulina Pukytė
She did not want to illustrate the dirty, grim household mentioned in Žemaitė's work. Especially since the author herself did not write realistically, rather she chose hyperbolization. The story metaphorically talks about what happens in people's heads. The problems lie in human attitudes, radicalism, unwillingness to understand others, fear of change. This is the terrible household that oppresses the characters.
