Jean-Luc Lagarce's play "I was at home waiting for the rain to come" (J'étais dans ma maison et j'attendais que la pluie vienne) is the penultimate work of the French actor, director and playwright. The play, written in 1994, a year before the author's death (he died of AIDS at the age of 38), is one of the three (next to "It's the end of the world", 1990, "Far Country", 1995) testamentary works of the playwright.
"I was at home and waited for the rain to come" tells the story of five women (sisters, mother, grandmother) who waited for many years for a brother, a son, a grandson. The women's lives seem to have stopped, stuck all this time... Now he is back and lies in his bed, which they kept for him. Sleeping? Dying? We never see him: is he really there, or is it only women's hopes, fears, projection of grievances, expectations?
"I found it beautiful that the play seems to be unfinished, that there are more pauses than action in it. This opens up space for interpretations, arouses the desire to think about the nature of love, sacrifice, and truth. The choice of this work is completely intuitive, but relevant both to me and to a person of the 21st century. The tragedy, depth and gentle humor intertwined in the text have an emotional effect and open up a broad and complex theme of waiting." (Kotryna Siaurusaitytė)
I was at home waiting for the rain to come
I looked at the sky as always,
To the road running far away.
I always watch in the evenings, I always stay up in the evenings
spending the night on the threshold and waiting, waiting...
I waited for the rain to come and wet the ground, the paths, the grass
and calm us down.
(Jean-Luc Lagarce. "I was at home waiting for the rain to come". Translated from French by Gintaras Patackas)
