, converted. Count Potockis from Vilnius is Jonas Vaitkus' three-act composition-libratory according to the dramatic legend of the writer Sholom Zelmanavičius, "Ger Cedek. Count Potock from Vilnius", artwork, Jewish cultural written and spoken sources.

Š. Zelmanavičius' legend "Ger Cedek. Count Potock from Vilnius" ("GER CEDEK. WILNER graf Potocki") came out in a very small edition in 1934. In Kaunas. GER Cedek is a Hebrew term for prose of proseness, a man who has moved to the Jewish religion, a convert.

Count Potockis is a partially historic person, a person burned in Vilnius 275 years ago. For the play Š. Zelmanavičius applied an old Jewish legend about the wealthy Christian young man who accepted Judaism, which became an integral part of the Jewish folklore not only in Vilnius, but of Eastern Europe. The prototype of legend was probably the decision of the Supreme Tribunal of Lithuania in 1753. June 9th Raphal, Raphal, was burned in Vilnius, who accepted Judaism and settled in the Ilya Stytle. There are several written stories of legend, but the fundamental motive of the narrative has remained the same for centuries - the tragic fate of a noble Christian who, due to the Jewish faith, is not only the fate of wealth and social status, but also of life.

The performance is very clear in several layers: Count Potocki and Judita's love and graph duality (it is home to two souls), accompanied by a pronounced desire to cleanse, repent for sins, and seek purity. The Count is a person seeking truth, and confession becomes a constant leitmotif who accompanies this man. The fire cleans the best, but in this case the fireman, the punishment.

Can we still die for beliefs? Where is the boundary between sacrifice, fanaticism and naivety? And in general, does the aspiration of cleanliness, modesty, moderation not contradicted today's prevailing ideology of "good life"? In the performance, the feeling of spiritual hunger invites the public to the hunting of the Lamb of God.

Š. Zelmanavičius creates a colorful Jewish world in the play, reveals Jewish history, religion and traditions. Special role in Š. Zelmanavičius devotes the Gaon of Vilnius, although the hero himself does not appear in the play. The legend of the converted is a carefully developed polemic of Christianity and Judaism, embodied by Count Potocki. Not only the conflict between the two great religions, but also the internal division of Judaism, becomes an important highlight of the play - the confrontation between Litvaks and Chassid.

The play is written in a rich, lively, emotional language, rich in the Hebrew language and the words and sayings of the Litvak dialect. In order to maintain as much authenticity as possible and convey the colorfulness of the language in the text, some names of Jewish cultural and religious realities are not translated.

In the performance (Yiddish, Lithuanian, Russian, Hebrew), they are struggling, pushing - as if in the streets of Vilnius, as if witnessing a disappearance of civilization.

"The play created by Potock Potockis, created by his parents in memory of his parents, seeks to detect the essential, fateful motifs of religious faith. In lively, colorful and mysticism scenes dramatically presented by the characters' states, and the tragic noble of the noble, the piousness of God. ” (Albertas Vidžiūnas)

The childhood of Sholom, his brothers and sisters passed in the Jewish cemetery, as the father of the children overseen the old Jewish cemetery in Vilnius, so the entire large family lived at the Funeral Society House in Šnipiškės, Derevnickajos str. 3. True and fictional stories heard in childhood about the persons buried in the cemetery later had a strong influence on the artist's work. 1919 After the Polish army took Vilnius on April 19-21. Pogroms occurred, not bypassing the Jewish cemetery. After losing both parents, Š. Zelmanavičius left the Vilnius region permanently, where anti -Semitism was growing and withdrew to Kaunas, where he worked as an assistant decorator at the State Theater, created decorations for performances, costumes for Kaunas Hebrew theater, organized two huge personal exhibitions, and was very productive. In the early period of creation, Š. Zelmanavičius experimented a lot and studied impressionism, primitivism, cubism, expressionism and photography. Interwar Lithuanian journalists wrote not only about Š. Zelmanavičius' work, but also his adventure - the artist was an exceptional personality in the life of Kaunas Bohemian.
