The Martyr (Märttyrer) Marius von Mayenburg is built and still tested in many European theaters. The play tells the story of a lonely mother -raised teenager Benjamin. When Benjamine's mother is told that the son has problems at school, she first thinks about drugs. But the guy "sits" on a different needle - the Bible. The student finds all the answers in Scripture and turns it into a tool of torture and terrorization of those around him. Benjamin thinks the only one knows what is good and what is bad. This results in conflicts, confrontation, psychological struggle. At school, he declares war on fornication. Even - he refuses to go to the pool because girls with bikini hurt his religious feelings. And that's just the beginning.
The playwright M. von Mayenburg wrote the "martyr" in 2012, and in the same year he was built at the Schaubühne Theater in Berlin. The play, which consists of 27 short and specific scenes, is reminiscent of film scripts, its problematic field is wide and relevant - the struggle of ideas, explored by the role of extremism and religion in society, revealing the contradictions of Western society, fragrance, fanaticism, and as correlated with religion. The play reveals the total adult, public disorder in the face of Christian radicalism. Theater critics compare the effect of this play with a hand grenade explosion - neoliberalism, political correctness and tolerance, and the extremely openly criticized superstitions of young minds. In the "Martyr", the madness of sexual, social maturation, passion is equated with the zeal of faith.
Theater critic Andrius Yevseyev, reviewing three 2015 M. von Mayenburg's "martyr" productions in Lithuania, Latvia and Poland, emphasizes that Benjamin Ziudel does not go into any compromise, constantly raises conflicts. With a single mother, classmates and teachers, they communicate solely, with a straightforward manifestation of the truths of the scripture, demanding to observe unconditionally a thousand -year -old dogmas. The hottest conflict lights up between him, religious fundamentalist, and biology teacher Erika Rot, just as a radical atheist Darwinite.

Benjamin
Today, on the day of the Holy Polycarp, I declare in the face of God and the world: I am tired. Tired of hiding and pretending to be sick, though I am the only one. I am tired that naked Lidia's shoulders shower shiny shiny like glazed donuts. Tired through the detected goggles, the staring at Melan's crotch as she swims in front of me. [...] I will go with it, maybe I didn't understand before, but now I understand, I clearly feel and even my body betrays it, so today, on the day of the Holy Polycarp, I declare war to the wicked [...].
You know it is wrong and that we are on the easiest way. You know that other religions are laughing at us because of this. Other religions have God's soldiers, bombers of suicides, martyrs who give up their lives because of the wrong faith. Nowadays, no Christian is so much. Everyone thinks we need to talk and find a compromise, that the sermon on the mountain is just about tolerance, and that we do not have so much cheeks so that we can unscrew them. This is because you do not read the writing and have created a hippie god that you feel well with, who forgive everything is for peace and smoking hashish. But all this is nonsense because the Lord says [...].
