Director Jonas Vaitkus defines the genre of the performance as "a futuristic metamorphosis and a farewell concert", which was inspired by the early poetry of the Russian futurist poet Vladimir Mayakovsky (1893-1930), the play "Mayakovsky. Tragedy" (1913) and the poems "Cloud with trousers" (1914) and "Flute - spine" (1915). J. Vaitkus' performance, in which almost the entire troupe of actors from the Vilnius Old Theater plays, aims to remind about the natural need for truth and justice, to shake and wake up the drowsy, entertainment-saturated society. The unique style of the poet V. Mayakovsky was formed in the complex and dramatic 20th century. at the crossroads of art pursuits. The avant-garde literature and art currents of that time claimed to create the art of the future - futurism, which denies and despises the culture of the past, the traditional norms of social life, exalts the rhythm of industry and confesses the cult of the big city. The poet's early lyrics are permeated with dualism, contradiction: the loneliness of the lyrical hero and the inexorable longing of people, the power of art and its inability to change the flow of being, the uncertainty of the future and a negative attitude towards the current reality. The conflict between the lyrical hero and reality, which permeated the structure of all the poems of V. Mayakovsky's futuristic period, becomes especially relevant and recognizable in the 21st century. context. According to Jonas Archikauskas, the artist who created the scenography and costumes for the play, V. Mayakovsky is not only relevant, but simply illustrates today's life. Our society is dominated by caprice and the religion of money, and human relationships have become a caricature. We can read all this in V. Mayakovsky's poetry created a hundred years ago. In addition, we want to remind and exalt the poet's talent in the language of the theater. Even if we hate his lines, they still affect us. Talent, nation and idea - between these concepts, a performance is born. "The Thirteenth Apostle, or Cloud in Pants" is a play that is moved not only by Mayakovsky or Vaitkus, but most importantly by the actors. From the very first moments, you can feel and watch how the actors become a part of the work, and the director finds a place for them in the system he is creating. (...) The rules of the overall theater are created here, when all components are inextricably linked. Such a creative principle is especially effective when trying to openly polemicize with the present, with modern futurism, when what was created by the predecessors is destroyed." (Daiva Šabasevičienė)
"The director works with broad strokes, the representation of Mayakovsky as an idea, a symbol that does not run out at any one time is more important to him. In the first part, the revolutionary is "humanized", in the second - a split lover, individualist and atheist, he is squeezed into such a passionate, romanticized and generalized aesthetic of the performance, which the whole being of the poet would oppose, every stone fallen word." (Rasa Vasinauskaitė)
"Thanks to the director Jonis Vaitkas, who took the work of a politically unfashionable artist and laid it out in a living futurism/postmodernism painting together with stage designer Jonas Archikauskas. However, it must be recognized right away: the incredibly well-functioning engine of this three-hour incredible image is V. Mayakovsky's poetry itself. With rare inspiration and dedication, the original language is recited and experienced by the actors." (Jūratė Visockaitė)
