"I always thought that I didn't like poetry, I didn't understand it," says actor Rolandas Kazlas, "I preferred prose, philosophers, playwrights, and looked at poets and verses with distrust. However, I was really waiting and looking for poetry that was close to me. It should probably be looked for as Love, as a beloved, and a poet as a soul brother. The same is true of a different self: more sensitive, more open, more subtle, loving and strangely glowing. After discovering the poetry of Vladas Šimkaus, I discovered what I was waiting for and secretly longing for." Poet, translator, editor Vladas Šimkus, who was born in Kelmė district and spent most of his life in Vilnius since his studies at Vilnius University, remained one of the most enigmatic destinies in Lithuanian literature. Having started to publish his work while still at school, at the age of 24 he published his first book of poetry, "Gražiausia sekundė", and a few years later he published a collection of poems, "Kranto kontortai" (1963). And the 1968 book of poetry "Iron and Silver" became an event not only in the biography of the poet himself, but also in Lithuanian poetry. As well as the poet's fourth independent collection "Bites pagėžėlės" (1973), which surprised colleagues and literary critics with a radical turn to ironic speaking, a painfully sober debunking of many entrenched cultural myths. This collection by Vlad Šimkaus was his last original book (in 1982, the collection "Nusileisk, dangau ant zemeše" was published). As the literary expert Professor Viktorija Daujotytė, who consulted the creators of the performance, wrote, "V. Šimkus, who had occupied the leading positions in Lithuanian poetry at the time with the best collection "Silver and Silver" (1968), almost inexplicably went into the subtext, into silence, and stopped writing poems. Only a translator, a high-ranking professional, and the same editor remained. In the editorial offices of "Literatūros ir meno", "Švyturios", "Pergalė", "Metų", he translated the works of A. Mickevičius, A. Voznesenskis, A. Puškin, B. Brecht, S. Vereš, A. Čak, H. Heinė, F. Garsia Lorka, F. Šiler, J.V. Gėtė and other poets, translated plays, musicals, librettos of operas and operettas for Lithuanian theaters, but more original poetry he no longer wrote. According to V. Daujotytė, Vladas Šimkus received rare attention from his poet friends and from critics who sensed the extent of his talent, but "when spoken to, asked why he doesn't write anymore, why he is silent, he answered simply: "I'm not quite quiet, it's worth a lot, after all, it's also creativity. Or: I'm tired of writing, as I wrote, and I don't know how else to do it... Sometimes with painful irony: I felt that I don't have talent... Talented people write easily, and I struggle so much, I even count..." Nevertheless, the poetry of Vladas Šimkaus, remaining in the four collections, its images and the image of the person who created that poetry - that ephemeral "matter" that attracts, speaks and (in the case of success) shapes the perceiver, overcame the time gap of several decades and became the impetus and content of the performance that Rolandas Kazlas invites to today. As the author of the performance "Iron and Silver" says, it should be "an open conversation with yourself and the audience about choice. And at the same time - an invitation. Among collapsed daggers, piles of iron, cold concrete, gray everyday life and accounting-counted household, to search, discover and feel the mysterious, weak light of silver. Fight for those rare silver minutes. Sometimes the fight is going to the subtext, to the silence..."
