Exhibition “Rave Nation. Night Rhythms for Freedom, 1992-2004”

Rave Nation is not quite about parties. Or - not just about parties.

It is an archive, a map of the fracture field, which is recognized as a form of culture as a form of resistance, escape and (over) formation, which shows only in small fragments remaining after the intensive party "battle": flyers, photographs and archive videos.

In the West, the culture of the Rave was born as illegal, collective ecstasy and post -industrial mourning or dissatisfaction with life, and in Lithuania between 1992-2004. She mutated to something else - Riva, which has a printing of local history and political tension and the taste of the newly newly experienced freedom. The English word "rave" means an ecstatic expression and an intense party, while the roots of the word seek medieval English, where it meant an uplifted state. In the 20th century. At the end of the 19th century, illegal electronic music events, which became a symbol of collective euphoria and alternative time, space and sound through continuous dance, were called in Western countries. The semiotic significance of the Rave is related to ideas of transcendence, community and resistance to social norms.

The title of the exhibition is not only reflected in the Rave Nation, German producer DJ Hooligan Track. Here it is a desire to be a nation in a newly born state and to enjoy it, but at the same time the desire to become part of the global world, y. community without borders. The Rave appears in Lithuania immediately after the declaration of independence and acts as a cultural subconscious - not a business plan, but a project of sound, pleasures and experimentation. For the younger generation, it was a new type of freedom - not constitutional, but vibrating, rhythmic, shared, creating its own spaces, their experiences, its own fashion, its own rules.

The question of what the Lithuanian Rave was different from the Western opens up a broader perception: the Rave is not only music or style, but also the technology of entertainment and identity creation. The Western Rivas was illegal, hedonistic, and in Lithuania the rav was more legal than illegal, but at the same time, radically alternative, euphoric. It is as if legally, but not at the underground of society. In addition, any Western culture had an underground aura in the Soviet memory. Therefore, in the first decade of independence, the Rave in Lithuania was both a celebration and an experiment and a certain new form of subjective form. Its participants fought for freedom to be different, to listen to different music, to amaze, to shock - and often risk their safety to belong to the Rive community.

In Lithuania, Ruivian -like parties could take place in the woods, bunkers, halls of the House of Culture or in newly compared clubs. They brought together the "tribes" of different electronic music styles, which did not always be friends, but all sent a signal to the same electronic music and dance space. This exhibition combines different fractions of the Rive Nation for the first time, or the tribe - from Happy Hardcore to House, from Vilnius to Marijampolė, from more pop disco to party bomb hiding places.

The exhibition consists of several layers. The core is the history of the Lithuanian River from 1992 to 2004, when the Rave becomes a Western model from the post -Soviet phenomenon. In some halls, artefacts are displayed that allows the processes to be captured: flyers, photographs and other documents and objects about DJs movement, club culture, dance and psychoactive substances, traveling through cities: Klaipėda, Kaunas, Vilnius, Marijampolė, Panevėžys, Šiauliai. Historical material is complemented by works of contemporary art: both created specifically for this exhibition and revealing Riva as the field of knowledge of the imagination, body, sound and commonality.

A free field.
