We continue "Musical tours around the world" and this Sunday we are going to the Caribbean, where many genres were born - rumba, apparently, bachata and others! We will listen to the lively creations of these regions from the recordings, and the listening will be enriched by the elements of live music. The evening is hosted by Eirim Velička.
Caribbean music is as alive and sunny as the nature of these lands and the people who live and create here. During the colonial period, the islands of Greater and Lesser Antilles developed distinctive creole cultures, in which features of West African and European (Spanish, French and British) and local cultures intertwine. Many distinctive, colorful music genres were born here: in Cuba - dancon, son, rumba; In Jamaica - mento, ska and regis, in Puerto Rico - bomba and plena, in the Dominican Republic - merengue and bachata, in the islands of Trinidad and Tobago - calypso and soca. Percussive instruments of African origin, European melody and harmony, and relics of local Native American music form the basis of the traditional music of these cultures. Caribbean music is characterized by inexhaustible energy, multi-layered rhythms with syncopation, close connection between music and dance. Song forms are dominated by a question-answer structure. Music has an important function: it is an expression of community identity and resistance.
This Sunday afternoon we will be listening to high quality Caribbean music recordings:
1. Calypso! The Caribbean Calypsonians (~1958-1965). The CD features 1960s calypso and reggae songs by The Caribbean Calypsonians and singers The Souverign, The Count od Monte Cristo and Lord Wilson.
2. Les Antilles: Ba Moin un Tibo, Doudou. Vol. 2 (Antilles: "Give Me a Kiss, Darling") (1976). Upbeat merengue and zouk songs are played here. They were recorded by the ensembles "Les Belaissières" and "Les Doudous de la Grande-Terre" led by Gerhard La Viny.
3. The decoration of the event is the nineteenth album Las Flores de la Vida ["Flowers of Life"] (Warner music, 2000) by Compay Segundo (real Francisco Repilado; 1907-2003), a famous Cuban singer and composer, performer of the son and dancon genres. This artist is well known to many listeners from the recordings of the ensemble Buena Vista Social Club and the movie of the same name. Compay Segundo recorded this album at the age of 93. What is the secret of his longevity? "Lamb broth and a glass of rum," admits the musician. Along with other newly created songs, the album also features the famous Guantanamera.
Musicologist Eirimas Velička will lead the musical afternoon. During the event, listening to music will be enriched by the elements of live music: we will play the son clavis rhythm together with the percussion, and we will sing Guantanamera together with the ukulele.
CLOSER TO MUSIC - these are not concerts, but evenings of meetings with music, led by interesting "companions" - musicologists, musicians, music lovers - fans of a certain genre, composer, instrument, performer or country's musical culture. They talk about the peculiarities of this music, demonstrate it live, select characteristic recordings for listening. The recordings are reproduced in high quality from vinyl records or high-resolution digital files - this allows you to feel the specific emotional content, evaluate the nuances of the performance, and reveal the depths of this music.
Important - children are admitted from the age of 7.
