Another pearl in the necklace of the International M. K. Čiurlionis Music Festival - a concert by the stars of classical music at the highest level.
The names of Pieter Wispelwey and Paolo Giacometti guarantee an impeccable understanding of the stylistics of each composer, an original interpretation and phenomenal craftsmanship, which will complete an unforgettable evening with an exceptional program. Mr. Wispelwey and Mr. Giacometti are well-known soloists.
The cellist Pieter Wispelwey is called by many a unique artist, who is famous for his sharp intellect and at the same time delicately sensual performance. In addition, this musician chooses programs that require special intellectual and physical qualities to play, which is why he is called one of the most charismatic recitalists in the world. Holland's one-night performances of all the Bach cello suites have received critical acclaim throughout Europe and the United States, not only for the complexity of the program, but also for the originality of the interpretation. After this extraordinary event, The New York Times wrote: "On paper, it looked like a plan for a feat that required brilliance, stamina, and perhaps a near tolerance for boredom. In practice, Mr. Wispelwey rose to the challenge impressively, offering both eloquent and provocative moments." Bach is not the only composer whose entire cycle is performed by P. Wispelwey. His repertoire includes all of Britten's and Beethoven's works for cello and Brahms's sonatas, which the cellist performed in Melbourne in three evenings, thus writing his name in the history of music.
Pianist P. Giacometti of Italian origin, residing in the Netherlands and Germany, is no less famous. He has won many prizes in international competitions, played with famous orchestras under conductors such as Frans Brüggen, Kenneth Montgomery, Lauren Petitgirard, Michael Tilkin and Jaap van Zweden. Mr. Giacometti has recorded numerous works for the Classical Music Channel, and his recordings are known as a benchmark of exceptional quality. The cycle of all Rossini's works for piano is especially appreciated, about which Italian critics wrote: "...Rossini has finally found his pianist...".
The Italian is also famous for his great love for chamber music. This led to successful collaborations with such world-renowned performers as violinist Gordan Nikolichium, Austrian clarinetist Alois Brandhofer, Australian oboist Bart Schneemann or violinist Viktorija Mullova.
However, he became truly exceptional when playing a duet with Pieter Wispelwey. in 2019 the duo was awarded the Brahms Prize for their innovative interpretations of the composer's music, which led them to record not only all of Brahms's duets, but also Schubert's duets. With this program, the ensemble regularly performs at prestigious festivals and the most famous halls.
For the listeners of the M. K. Čiurlionis International Music Festival, the duo has chosen an exclusive program, which will include works by Bach and Ligeti performed solo by the musicians, as well as chamber works by Schubert, Brahms and Chopin.
