Although all of R. Tumin's plays put the viewer in a festive mood, allowing them to experience the almost childlike pure joy of celebration, "Masquerade" probably surpasses them all: it will appeal to the thinking, beauty-seeking or humor-seeking audience. The work involves a love story centered on a lost bracelet, where various characters are involved: gamblers, ladies, a baroness, a duke, servants and those you can't even name exactly - people who surround us every day, who are mediators of pure love and its pests.
In a performance of amazing aesthetics, we hear the sounds of the waltz of the Armenian composer Aram Khachaturian and the slowly falling snow in the empty black space of the stage. The cultural experience of the past century is nostalgically reflected, making us remember the theater of B. Brecht and G. Strehler, Broadway frenzies or F. Fellini's films. In Rim Tumin's "Masquerade", the director's vivid and individual sense of romanticism is related not only to the culture of the 19th century, but also to the world of folklore, the genre of commedia dell'arte. The elements of the latter genre do not allow the enchanting spectacle to turn into a mere sentimental melodrama, in the hands of the director it turns into an eccentric tragicomedy.
The play, which entered the "golden fund" of the Lithuanian theater, has traveled to many countries of the world - from Sweden to Italy, from South Korea to Mexico - and won several prestigious awards. After the "Masquerade" tour in Great Britain in 1999. The Guardian named the troupe from Vilnius one of the best in the world.
