Ensemble "Lietuva" presents the premiere - the dance performance "Sofija", which with a bold look will evoke what is (un)expected, and maybe often kept silent. The new program will be presented on March 5-6. in the old theater of Vilnius, later the tour will continue in other Lithuanian cities. The years of M. K. Čiurlionis are full of attention to his most prominent merits and the impressive biography of the artist, which inspired the creators of the performance to the opposite idea - an extremely sensitive and open (re)acquaintance with his great muse Sofija Kymantaite - Čiurlionien.
"It is time to look back at the person who best understood and most deeply felt the genius of M.K. Čiurlionis at the present time. The contribution of a person who, in our opinion, was undeservedly left in the shadow of her husband, an undeservedly forgotten contribution. Sofia is a woman who has persevered through the twists and turns of life, who has contained many roles within herself. Her love, struggle, determination and dedication are simply inspiring. While researching the biography, I realized that she had a lot to do to experience, those experiences will also encourage the audience to reflect, will raise provocative questions", says the director and head of the Lietuva ensemble about the born idea. choreographer Aušra Krasauskaitė. The new play will highlight the multifaceted personality of S. Kymantaitė - Čiurlionienė, especially the less revealed sides, the most intimate breaks and transformations, with an affecting language of movement and symbols. What does it mean to live with a genius? How to survive a loved one's mental illness? What is the point of fighting and protecting every memory of a man? How much can love withstand poverty, unrecognition? How many roles can fit into one woman? "Čiurlionis is one of the most intriguing Lithuanian artists, whose life, work and thoughts allow us not only to delve into the unique philosophy of art about the eternal incompleteness of the work, to ask where is the border between genius creation and madness, and to worry about non-recognition or poverty. Alongside this, we can admire an extraordinary love story with a strong, exceptional woman - Sofija Kymantaite. An active nurturer of Lithuania, social activist, writer, one of the first of literature and theater critics. Sofija Kymantaitė - a genius teacher, muse, mother of a child, the main custodian and spreader of Čiurlionis' work. After the death of her beloved husband, Sofija turned her life into a driving force, and the fact that we can delve into Čiurlionis' work is only because of her persistence and Sofia's consistent devotion. Čiurlionis disrupted her life like a hurricane, but at the same time dictated a clear direction for him with his early death," the creators say. Sofija, already at the age of 21, was engaged in political activities, actively participated in the activities of the Lithuanian women's movement. The first scout leader and the only woman - Lithuania's representative in the League of Nations. Contributed to the development of the Lithuanian language, taught this language to Čiurlionis. As you know, in the last years of his life, Čiurlionis suffered from nervous exhaustion and was treated at the Pustelnik sanatorium near Warsaw. It was likely a severe form of depression or schizophrenia, although the exact diagnosis remains a matter of debate. This disease interrupted his work precisely when he was close to his most mature works. His beloved Sofija said that Čiurlionis often painted or wrote music at night, as if in a creative ecstasy - sometimes he worked for several days in a row without rest. This weakened his health even more. The dance performance will exclusively be based on M.K. Čiurlionis' musical and artistic legacy. Čiurlionis' works are characterized by a unique synthesis between music and fine art, deep symbolism, spiritual and natural motifs. Biographical facts are also important, through which the main characters of our play will be revealed. The biography of Čiurlionis tells about a genius man who combined music, painting, literature and philosophy. We invite you to get to know Čiurlionis not only as a great creator, but also as a human being - a down-to-earth personality that resonates with us, with all the dramatic facts of life, experienced internal difficulties, with the created relationship to the environment, people, dialogue with creativity. At the same time, the line of femininity will open - Sofia's bright personality and merits, her life story and relationship with her lover. According to the director A. Krasauskaitė, a sensitively deep relationship with Lithuania, the love of a man and a woman, conflicts or even manifested schizophrenia will be revealed here. The choreography will be dominated by classical, neoclassical and contemporary dances, dynamic mass scenes will be replaced by duets and solo compositions. Modern choreography, interwoven with ethnic motifs, supplemented with Lithuanian folk customs will strengthen the created images. The scenography will be inspired by the painting of M.K. Čiurlionis. The performance will feature a modern arrangement of M.K. Čiurlionis' music, motifs of the most recognizable works. Music by composer Mindaugas Urbaitis will be used. Director and choreographer A. Krasauskaitė is a laureate of the Golden Cross of the Stage and the Mask of Thanks, who creates in various Lithuanian theaters, having created choreography for such projects of the ensemble "Liethuva" as the musical drama "Emilija", the collage opera "Mažvydas", the musical drama "The Tale of the Gifted Heart" or the dance performance "Dance Symphony from Northern Jerusalem" based on the music of Jievars Jasinskis. The creator of the new project was also inspired by dance performances - "Žemaitė N.18(0)" dedicated to the year of the writer Žemaitė and "Dėdės ir dėdienės" by Juoz Tumas-Vaižgantas.
