The famous Italian composer A. Ponchielli's opera "Lietuviai" was created based on the poem "Konrad Valenrod" by A. Mickevičius, and premiered in 1874. took place in Milan's famous La Scala theater. The work, which tells about the heroism of Lithuanians during the wars with the Crusaders, was a great success and became a symbol of the Italians' freedom struggles!

"Lietuvius" was intended to be staged at the Lithuanian Opera in 1939. Through the mediation of the Italian Minister Baron di Giura, the Italian Ministry of Press and Propaganda then granted the Lithuanian Opera the right to stage this work. Unfortunately, the Second World War and the Lithuanian tragedy prevented the premiere of the opera. Lithuanians built "Lietuvius" for the first time in 1981. In the Lithuanian Opera of Chicago based on the perfectly translated and edited libretto by Stasios Santvaros. The production of this opera in Chicago in 1991 became a special event, when the Lithuanian Opera of Chicago together with LNOBT could present the history of Lithuania to the whole world for the first time. An impressive commemorative production was created in 2009. In Trakai Castle, commemorating the 1000th anniversary of the name of Lithuania. From 2020 Every year on July 6, Lithuanians used to ring in the courtyard of the Palace of Lords to commemorate the Lithuanian State Day.

The score of "Lietuvių" is impressive, colorful orchestra, monumental choirs, extremely beautiful episodes of the choir a cappella, melodious parts of soloists. 2025-2026 the LNOBT season will begin with the premiere of this outstanding opera, and this time it will be performed on our stage by the famous Argentinian director Hugo De Ana, who also creates the scenography and costumes for this production.
