Giuseppe Verdi's opera "Don Karlas" is one of the most significant theater productions and, despite extremely controversial opinions, a very powerful performance. And could it be otherwise? After all, G. Verdi's "Don Karlas", classified as a "grand opera" (grand opera) genre, is a strong work not only with its wonderful music, but also with the characters of the historical characters and the dramatic plot.

The premiere of the opera took place in 1867. Set in Paris, the opera is based on a play by Friedrich Schiller. In this drama of Schiller lay what Verdi was looking for in his late operas - leaving theatrical external dramas and librettos full of romantic passions, the composer turned towards inner tragedy; there is little external action in these works, but they aim to express inner experiences, the search for truth and the longing of humanity.

In 2016, the builders, creating their own version of this opera, chose a non-illustrative rendering of the drama, but sought to reveal its deepest layers. The director's main goal was to delve into G. Verdi's work and to abandon opera from the 19th century. The clichés accompanying the Parisian scene. In this production, Günter Krämer presented unexpected solutions and connections: the creator was influenced and inspired by rock culture star David Bowie's posthumous farewell message - the music video for the song "Blackstar" and its meaning.

The creators of the show won 3 Golden Crosses of the Stage awards - Günter Krämer was declared the best director of the year, Herbert Schäfer (for the best scenography) and mezzo-soprano Eglė Šidlauskaitė (for the role of Eboli) were also praised.
