La strada | The Road is a 1954 film by director Federico Fellini. The Academy Award winner is the heartwarming story of Gelsomina, a childishly naïve young woman sold by her mother to a traveling strongman circus performer, who still manages to find hope and wonder in her difficult life.

From 1952 to 1979, the famous Italian director worked closely with the composer Nino Rota. Rota's La strada score masterfully conveys moods ranging from energy to poignancy, and shows his skillful use of musical means of expression to portray characterful characters. A dozen years after the film's release, Milan's La Scala, one of the world's major opera houses, asked Rota to write a ballet version of La strada; the score was first performed in 1966.

In this production, which premiered at Munich's Gärtnerplatztheater in 2018. on July 12, one of today's most famous choreographers, Marco Goecke, tells an exciting story in the language of ballet.
