To begin the story about Carmen, one would have to start with the fact that it is the most performed opera in the world, and its author, Georges Bizet, remained the author of only one masterpiece in the history of opera. In the 135 years that have passed since its premiere at the Opéra-Comique in Paris, there is no opera that can match G. Bizet's Carmen in the number of productions. It was not sudden fame, Carmen's appearance was accompanied by scandal rather than success. However, its popularity, which came after Bizet's death, does not fade even today. Bizet's plans included about 30 opera sketches. But apart from Carmen, only four of them were completed and built during his lifetime. However, one Carmen would be enough for Bizet's fame to spread deservedly to this day.
Each country has its own perception of women. Spaniards like strong women - both character and the role of Carmen are always a challenge for the singer. She is fatalistic, hedonistic, lives only in the present moment. Carmen is ready to give all of herself, fully aware of the power of such an act, but she will demand exactly the same from the person to whom she surrenders. "Free, independent mistress of all her desires", Carmen radiates destructive, wild passion and inexplicably seductive power. Perhaps, this is the most charismatic character in operas. José, to his misfortune, captivated by Carmen's whims, loses everything - his whole egalitarian world, moral, calm, virtuous, collapses. He imagines that with his love he will be able to keep her, maybe even redeem her... Unfortunately.
A French-Spanish temperament, an intriguing plot about a Spanish gypsy who chose death in the name of freedom and love, but above all, wonderful, well-known music that sounds everyday in various forms - in Lithuania, as in the whole world, this opera has always been and is a favorite of the audience. Carmen always returns - every time she is embodied in a new way, in her essence she is always the same - intriguing, arousing surprise, hope and admiration. The story of Carmen is the most vibrant cultural myth of our century about the mysterious nature of women.
