Encouraged by the success of Pietro Mascagni's one-act opera Cavalleria rusticana, Giacomo Puccini c.1904. began planning a cycle of one-act operas. Various circumstances led to the fact that it was finally created only after more than ten years and became the last completed work of the composer himself. Three one-act operas of different moods, connected by the author in a triptych and performed in one evening according to his idea, premiered in 1918. in December in New York, at the Metropolitan Opera.
The action of the first of the operas, Skraiste, takes place in 1910. In Paris, on a barge standing on the Seine embankment. Dark and anxious, full of dark violence and tormented love, the work is closest to the verism style. Sister Angelica is a lyrical drama set in a convent in the second half of the 17th century. side This is the author's own favorite triptych, upliftingly telling the story of redemption of guilt, feelings raised by faith. The third, comical part of the triptych, Džanis Skikis, is the most popular and is often performed separately. The opera, based on Dante's plot, has a lot of farce, humor and twisting intrigues of the main character, the famous Florentine con artist Gianni Skiki.
